Hand protection from dermatitis
Allergic contact dermatitis or eczema is a rash that usually appears as
a result of being hypersensitive, or allergic, to one or more substances.
These can be anything from foodstuffs, chemicals, detergents, plants and
metals. Once you have discovered what you are sensitive to you need to
try to avoid altogether, or at least limit the frequency and duration
of contact with these offending substances. Hand dermatitis is a particular
problem since it effects many day-to-day activities that are difficult
to avoid. The following helpful guidelines provide information on how
to protect your hands.
- Regularly use specially formulated cleansers for washing sensitive
skin, and use a hand cream to protect and lubricate after washing
- Try to keep your hands at a regular room temperature - extreme
cold and hot temperatures will irritate the rash. Also minimize
the amount of times your hands are exposed to water
- Try to wear thin cotton gloves at all times to protect you
skin
- Use heavy-duty vinyl gloves to avoid contact with irritants
whilst working with offending substances, for example; detergents
used in housework, or solvents and paint used for practical work.
You can wear cotton gloves underneath these gloves for extra protection
- Wear light disposable vinyl gloves for tasks like shampooing
and preparing food
- Wear cotton gloves over night after treating hands with cream
or emollient
- Continue protection after symptoms have eased since skin will
still be sensitive and weak whilst recovering
